How one curated toyshop is bringing empowering, diverse toys to a wider audience with online sales
Three years ago, Louise Reed took over a small online toyshop after a career in marketing in Wales. Her business model: selling a carefully curated range of products intended to educate, inspire and empower all children, no matter their gender, race, ability or background.
Little Nutkins was doing well as an online business, but Louise wanted to reach new customers and develop a better online presence, especially when introducing new products and keeping her customers up to date on the latest promotions. Louise developed her digital skills after receiving free one-to-one mentoring and training from Google.
Although Louise already had experience with Google Shopping (a simple tool that allows retailers to upload their products and prices directly to Google Search), she knew she needed to learn new digital skills to build her business. After her mentoring sessions with Google, she set up a Google My Business listing – a free online profile that allows her to easily connect with customers on Google Search and Maps. She built up her profile with photos of her product range, alongside information about how her business has adapted to Covid-19 restrictions, including delivery options.
“I learned a lot from my mentor,” says Louise. “From setting up my Google My Business profile through to general business support and advice on optimising my website.”
Louise also learned how to use the data from Google Analytics to understand where her website visitors were coming from, and how to make optimisations like including top-priority products on pages getting the most traffic in order to maximise sales.
With the support she has received from Google, Louise feels more confident, and Little Nutkins looks set to keep growing by offering new click-and-collect services for customers across the UK.
“I’m always keen to learn more, so I was really grateful for the experience, plus the training is free, which is amazing! It’s definitely worth any small business looking at it,” says Louise. “For Little Nutkins, 2021 will be all about agility, growth and bringing more products to empower our little adventurers, doers and thinkers.”
