Job-Ready skills you can put to work

Flexible online training designed to put you on the fast track to jobs in high-growth fields.

In 2018, Google launched the IT Support Certificate to create a pathway to jobs in IT for people with no college degree or experience. Since then, thousands of people have completed the program, making it the top professional certificate program on Coursera.

Google is expanding the program and creating more pathways to fast-growing, high-paying fields. These certificates, built and taught by Google employees, are designed to prepare Canadians from all backgrounds for jobs where there is great demand for qualified candidates.

The Certificates

As part of the Google Career Certificates, you’ll engage with a dynamic mix of hands-on labs and other interactive assessments, all developed by Google employees. A degree from a post-secondary education program isn’t a requirement to enroll.

The Google IT Support Professional Certificate introduces you to troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security — all the fundamentals of IT support that are critical for success in the workplace.

The Google IT Automation with Python Professional Certificate builds on your IT foundations to help you take your career to the next level. This program teaches you in-demand skills like programming in Python, using Git, advanced troubleshooting, and IT automation techniques.

The Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate introduces you to the world of data analytics and how to collect, transform, and organize data in order to help make informed business decisions. You'll develop in-demand data analytics skills using spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau, R, and more.

The Google Project Management Professional Certificate introduces you to project management artifacts and skill sets for planning, organizing and running projects so they can be delivered on time and on budget. You'll discover how to manage projects efficiently and effectively, using traditional and agile methods.

The Google UX Design Professional Certificate introduces you to the foundations of the design process, including empathizing with users, building wireframes and prototypes, and conducting research to test your designs. You’ll understand how to make digital and physical products that are easier and more enjoyable to use.

Susan Fung
Operations Manager & IT Support
Calgary, Alberta

Susan works for a small company, and as the employee most familiar with IT, she naturally fell into the role of lending a hand when it came to technology in the office. With the team growing and more technology being introduced, she felt like she should broaden her knowledge to best support her colleagues in their daily work. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate gave her those tools, and has helped her introduce professional development sessions for employees with varying skill levels using tech. While it is a departure from her undergraduate degrees in science and kinesiology, Susan is enjoying the opportunities for continued growth within IT. “There is so much you can do in IT and there is so much to learn,” she says. “You will never stop learning in this industry.”

More opportunities for everyone

Education and technology are keys to opportunity, but so are equity and access. To ensure that more people have access to the Google Career Certificates, we’ll be providing a grant to NPower Canada to deliver Google Career Certificate programs, and deploy 5,000 need-based scholarships to access the program.

Google Career Certificate scholarships will be distributed through NPower Canada, in collaboration with youth and workforce development non-profits like Pathways to Education, Toronto Public Library and the YMCA, focusing on young Canadian adults from underserved communities. Those interested in applying for a scholarship can do so here.

Starting in 2021, and over the next three years, NPower Canada will take the 5,000 scholarship recipients through the programs, providing ongoing wraparound support, and the skills needed to be job-ready upon completion.

Gideon Gray
IT Support Analyst
London, Ontario

Gideon originally studied concert technology (lights, audio, pyrotechnics, etc.) and had little experience with IT work. But after completing a computer technology course, his interest was piqued and he was curious to learn more before looking for jobs in the field. From Linux operations to Sysadmin and Security, the Google IT Support Professional Certificate armed Gideon with the knowledge to succeed, and fostered a particular interest in Networking. He now supports all IT operations at a university leadership centre, answering the IT needs of 60 staff members and any clients that have booked the space. “During the interview, the hiring team was impressed with the scope of work that the certificate consisted of,” he says. “I love the freedom and trust my employer is giving me.”
