Siti Fatimah Ibrahim | From nurse instructor to system analyst

People often ask me how did I go from over a decade of being in the nursing industry to becoming a system analyst. My journey started with a desire to improve our team’s productivity. Using my knowledge of data analytics learnt via tutorial videos online, I managed to increase my department’s efficiency by 90% while helping them move from a manual system of documentation to a digital one. My success motivated me to explore more structured learning opportunities to further build my skills as an analyst.

Thankfully, I was lucky enough to secure a scholarship with Trainocate to complete the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate at no charge!

Having a deeper understanding of data analytics, I took on additional roles at work, including using insights to improve a new virtual learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as upgrading our clinical student registration and staff development management system by increasing its efficiency and data capabilities.

Soon, I gained the confidence I needed to make a career change. In my new company, I constantly had to communicate with developers and stakeholders to develop and improve clinic systems. With so many new responsibilities, I wanted a way to better manage my role, which is why I decided to take up a Google Project Management Professional Certificate.

Interestingly, this was a turning point because the Managing Director noticed my potential due to my analytical abilities, project management skills and interest in digital transformation in the healthcare industry. He offered me a very different role from my original position — and that’s how I became a system analyst.

I then continued to upskill myself with the Google Business Intelligence Professional Certificate to better understand the business side of things. This has been exceptionally helpful in my current role as I am now able to form attractive proposals that are suitable for both a local and international audience as our software company mainly builds healthcare systems.

To be honest, this career transition has been quite an empowering journey as I am constantly learning new skills and knowledge that I never once imagined possible. I’m glad I went out of my comfort zone as I am now very happy with where I am. Not only have I gained so much in terms of knowledge and experience, I now also have the freedom to decide on my career path in any chosen industry as my skills are now transferable.

I’m excited for the future and my present goal is to better combine the use of data analytics and technology to digitise and make a difference in the Malaysian healthcare industry. I hope that my story will inspire others to discover their strengths and show them that anyone can find opportunities beyond their current role in Malaysia.
