Training in software development with Google helps Allan build a new career
Allan Juma grew up in the rural community of Meru, Kenya. As a child, he loved electronics and when his mother bought him a smartphone, the Google Map function sparked something in him. He decided that he was going to learn to build software and become a full-time developer.
Getting access to study materials was a challenge for him and when he heard about the Andela Learning Community (ALC) 2.0 programme, powered by Google, he applied and gained access to learning materials via Udacity which helped him to become a certified developer.
At a Google Developer Group event, Allan was introduced to Caine Wanjau, CTO of Twiga Foods, by a developer who he’d met and impressed with his knowledge. Caine realized that Allan had something special - so even though he had not yet finished his final exams, he offered him the position of a full-time developer, which normally would go to someone with 2 to 3 years experience.
Now Allan is not only loving his new job, but is able to support himself and has moved into a new home. “Being a developer has really changed my life. I don’t have to depend on my parents for money and I’m now able to pay my bills and get some good shelter.”
