Alice Olivia determines her own musical destiny with YouTube

Alice Olivia is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Cambridge, UK signed with London-based independent label ‘Creating Monsters’. Alice always knew she was going to do something with music but she wasn’t so great at auditions for music college. “I knew there was a way around it,” she says, “and YouTube was the answer. With YouTube you get to put your music out to whoever you want.” Alice’s big break on YouTube arrived when her cover of Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ was viewed 50,000 times in a single night. It was then that she realised just how powerful the platform had become. “People have such massive careers and it’s taken me the past six months to realise that it’s actually possible.” Since her breakthrough on YouTube, Alice has grown her profile steadily, with 2015 being the turning point. Having recently released her own EP, she now has self-penned songs to perform and her performance at the Isle of Wight festival was, she says, amazing. Released only a few weeks ago, Alice’s cover of Sam Smith’s ‘Writing on the Wall’, theme song to the latest James Bond movie, has already received over 115,000 views. A delighted Alice says: “Every opportunity I’ve ever had has come from YouTube. I’m learning every day about how I can use it to my advantage and reach even more people.”
